Ross Wirth – Elemental Turmoil

The basic elements, Fire – Air – Earth – Water all swirling together to produce the world as we know it, captured here just prior to creation.

 – – – – – – – – – – – –

96 COE, white base with powder and fine frit for the design.  Capped with iridized clear (irid side down).

Colors below are all powder unless specified as fine frit.

Fire – red opal, flame opal, orange opal, and a very light scattering of fine cherry red.

Air – light sky blue base covered with clouds of champagne opal over mauve, champagne opal, and pale gray.  Spaces between the clouds filled in with more sky blue.

Earth – dark amber, light green, and deep purple with hunter green highlights.

Water – light scattering of fine cobalt blue opal covered with sea green, a little mauve and a 3:1:1 mix of sky blue, mauve, and pale gray powder.

One firing with a bubble squeeze to remove some of the air spaces between piles of powder.  The bubbles that remain are well distributed and bring out the movement desired as well as helping with the iridized effect.

  1. Ross,

I like the way you portrayed each of the different elements. There is a lot of detail in each segment with your choice of powder and frit color that achieves the goal of representing each of the elements. Nicely done.

  2. Ross, I’m drawn to your spiral pattern. Love the texture & strong, vibrant color. The blue separating the reds from greens is a great balance!

  3. Ross,

Nicely done. I like the play of the irid top against the texture of the frits. The spiral is an effective way to combine the four elements.
